Newsletter for April 2025
This is the online edition of my monthly newsletter. If you’d like to receive the newsletter directly to your email, sign up using the form at the end of this post!
Well, here we are (by Stephen Sondheim). The first edition of my monthly newsletter, featuring upcoming shows I have + any news + some theater recommendations from a certain feathered friend. Let’s get this show on the road.
Upcoming shows
Serials returns! Come to the Tank at 312 W. 36th Street NYC May 1-3 to catch episode 2 of my zombie western horror comedy The Good, the Bad, and the Undead, directed by Laura Linsey and performed by Team Midnite Snaxx (Alice Lussiana Parente, Macy Lanceta, Keith Weiss, Henri Brusasco, and Max Bowen)! Thursday May 1 performance is at 7pm, while Friday and Saturday May 2-3 are at 9:30pm. If we get voted back, then come back around May 15-17 for Episode 3! Tickets (both in-person and virtual) can be bought here.
As always, I have plenty of full-length shows in the works, and I try to host as many of them as I can on my NPX account. Give me a follow there if you haven’t already! I’m looking to get eyes on my parody play Fussbudget, so check it out and leave a review if you’re so inclined!
By the way, gonna be a bit shameless here: I’m actively seeking out puppetry performance opportunities! So if you have any leads or are looking to staff your own production, let me know! I specialize in Muppet-style hand and rod + Live-Hand puppetry, but also have some experience in bunraku, marionettes, and shadow puppets.
News
Most people on this list are already aware of this, but I’ve joined the Serials Artists Pool, the SERIALISTAS! This is a new program Serials is piloting, made up of regular actors, writers, and directors, who besides contributing onstage will also be helping out with running the bar, doing social media videos, etc. What this means for me, basically, is I’ll be hanging around at the Tank for Serials even when I’m not writing (although let’s be frank, I was doing that already)!
By the way, if you’re in a position to help financially support Serials, consider becoming a monthly donor to the Serials Patreon! Every contribution goes directly to paying the many artists who help make Serials the fun late-night indie theater ruckus that I and so many others love.
Also, I’ll be making a guest appearance on the Much Ado About Muppets podcast on Wednesday, April 16. Tune in to hear me give Peter, Evan, and Sasha my extensive (and I mean truly extensive) Muppet casting for that classic Shakespeare tragedy Julius Caesar. Available wherever you get your podcasts!
With that out of the way… let’s hear a word from Terence the Toucan!
Terence’s Theater Picks
Oh blimey, he throwing things over to me, huh? Well, might as well give the people what they want.
Hey everyone! It’s me. Terence the Toucan, the bird with the word. My services have been requested in sending out some recommendations for shows that my assistant thinks you should see. And while I don’t trust my assistant’s judgment all the time, you can certainly trust my judgment, so hear me when I say these recommendations come with my full… recommendation!
Glass. Kill. What If If Only. Imp. by Caryl Churchill at the Public Theater, running until May 11. $38 digital rush tix available from TodayTix, and $30 in-person rush at the box office!
Bread and Puppet: The Obligation to Live Tour will be at Judson Memorial Church Tuesday and Wednesday, April 15-16 (Kenjiro will be there on Tuesday if you wish to join him). RSVP to either show at this link.
If you like cowboy comedies, check out Henry Hicks: Cowboy Attorney at Law by Jack McManus, currently playing as part of Frigid’s NYC Fringe Festival! I (Terence the Toucan) have a lot of friends involved in this show, so come show your support! Catch the remaining two performances at the Chain Theatre on Wednesday April 16 (only virtual tix available!) and Saturday April 19. Tickets here.
dear kitty (or, not another anne frank play): a travesty by fellow theater artist Amelia Merrill will be playing at A.R.T./NY’s Mezzanine Theatre as part of the RE/VENUE NYC festival on Wednesday April 16, 9pm! Tickets here.
Can’t Make an Omelette by D.A. Mindell and produced by friend Vick Liu is being presented as part of Columbia University’s New Play Festival April 19-20! Get your tickets here.
Clubbed Thumb announced their lineup for Summerworks 2025, running May 15-July 1, featuring new plays by Milo Cramer, Mara Nelson-Greenberg, and Ro Reddick. I don’t know about you, but I always wait to buy my tickets for Summerworks shows at the last minute and they end up being sold out, so if you’d like to save yourself the stress of rushing day-of, buy your festival pass now!
If you’re on the lookout for some theater networking events, here’s two I recommend:
Breaking & Entering Theatre Collective and the Makers’ Ensemble are hosting an indie theater salon on Saturday, April 26, 6:30pm at the Makers’ Space in Brooklyn! RSVP here.
Good Apples Collective is hosting a Director-Playwright Speed Dating event on Sunday April 27, 2-4pm in Tompkins Square Park. RSVP here.
Those are my picks, everyone! And now, let’s throw things back to my assistant.
Thanks Terence! Well, that about wraps it up. Expect to get one of these about once a month. I’m kind of playing around with how this will work.
Avast,
Kenjiro Lee
